Abstract

A coastal revetment is a cladding to the sloping surface of either the natural shoreline or a flood embankment, which protects and stabilises it against erosion by wave action. There are about 700 km of coastal revetments around the British coastline. Part A of this Technical Note reviews the types of revetment that have been used, principally rock or concrete construction, and reports on their performance. Regional problems due to the loss of foreshore are identified, and the approach to maintenance adopted by different authorities is reported. Existing maintenance costs are outlined with a view to achieving minimum overall capital, maintenance and replacement cost. Part B sets out guidelines for the design and maintenance of coastal revetments, together with a comprehensive list of references.
