Abstract

Summarises a series of small-scale fire tests on ribbed concrete floors. The test parameters included aggregate type, section shape, reinforcement pattern, surface protection in the form of grc permanent formwork, and a range of concrete repair systems. The tests suggest that limestone aggregate concrete has advantages over gravel or granite aggregate in terms of protecting the reinforcement in the event of fire. No spalling of the grc was observed during a four-hour test and reinforcement temperatures were significantly lower than in a controlled slab. The repaired concrete slabs spalled earlier than the original concrete but most appeared to be adequate for fire resistance periods of up to 60 minutes.
