Technical Note
Describes a range of tests to determine the web buckling characteristics of rolled steel beams. A small number of beam sizes with relatively slender webs were examined, and the test programme included varying degrees of top flange restraint, together with some cases of load eccentricity. Two distinct types of failure were observed. The first was a flexural-torsional buckling mode involving in plane top flange rotation. The second was characterised by elastic-plastic buckling of the web, the exact form depending upon the external and top flange restraint.
