Abstract

The guidance notes review the design procedure for high strength friction grip (HSFG) connections. A basic description of the bolt behaviour is given, including the bolt characteristics, and influence of bolt grade. Special considerations are given to the dimension and procedure requirements of the bolt torque operation. Aspects such as the use of slotted holes are also discussed. The analysis of HSFG bolted connections is rigorously reviewed. In particular the behaviour of bolts in bending and tension is quantified, especially with regard to prying action, where the plate deformation enhances the external bolt tension. A simple formula is put forward to account for this prying force, which limits the loss of bolt preload on unloading. Many design examples are followed through with reference to the preceding text. These include beam-column, beam splice, hanger and corbel examples. A useful summary diagram of possible connection types is also cross-referenced to appropriate calculations.
