Abstract
This report examines the role of blue–green infrastructure (BGI) in improving urban water quality, with a focus on sustainable drainage systems (SuDS). It reviews major sources of urban pollution, sediment and pollutant loading dynamics, and the performance of SuDS components in removing suspended solids and associated contaminants. Using experimental data and hydro-morphodynamic modelling, the guide evaluates sediment detention efficiencies across wetlands, swales, ponds, and floodplains, highlighting long-term trends and implications for design, maintenance, and flood resilience. Case studies from the UK and USA illustrate practical applications and benefits for water quality enhancement and urban sustainability.
