Abstract
Discusses best practice in development management for minimising fire risk in the built environment, a focus since the Grenfell tragedy. Considers the relationship between planning and building control; resourcing in local authority planning, building control and the fire service; issues with the current operation of building control and deregulation. Puts forward a number of potential strategies for addressing fire safety during development management covering changes to the process or order of permissions, increasing revenue generation from local authorities and building control, promotion of skill sharing, reconsideration of the current focus on deregulation and introduction of clearer lines of responsibility.
