Abstract

Describes the benefits of concrete framed buildings, discussing whole life value, cost and programme, speed of construction, frame, foundation and cladding costs. Looks at performance in use, co-ordination and environmental aspects such as thermal mass. Covers typical structural forms, then highlights key elements for: flat slabs, post-tensioned slabs, ribbed and waffle slabs, beams and slabs, hybrid concrete construction, precast concrete and crosswall. Compares the various structural forms in terms of lead in times and speed of construction, span and depth of construction data and then examines each in depth. Highlights innovations in concrete mixes, looking at the benefits of high performance concretes, flowing concretes and self-compacting concretes. Examines emerging construction methods, which offer fast and efficient systems that can be used in high rise structures, also looks at slipform and jump form construction. Also explores sustainability issues.

Publisher History

The Concrete Centre is the central development organisation for the UK concrete sector and provides material, design and construction guidance. Their aim is to enable all those involved in the design, use and performance of concrete to realise the potential of the material. Funded by 15 major cement and concrete organisations, the Concrete Centre works alongside the British Cement Association, The Concrete Society, and the ready mix and precast concrete industries to ensure an integrated approach from the concrete sector to technical support, research, education, training and information services. The Reinforced Concrete Council and the Ready Mixed Concrete Bureau are now part of The Concrete Centre.
