Abstract
Reviews the method used to determine pedestrian crossing times needed at signal controlled pedestrian crossings in stand alone situations or at junctions. Describes the principles of pedestrian crossings, and looks at the issues of providing crossings with an increasing elderly population. Explores the technical changes required to alter the walking speed parameters of signal controllers and looks at current guidance used in transport modelling. Evaluates the impacts for traffic and discusses various options. Provides 8 recommendations.
