Planning Policy Statement
Abstract
Sets out the Department's revised planning policies for economic development uses and indicates how growth associated with such uses can be accommodated and promoted in development plans. Seeks to facilitate and accommodate economic growth in ways compatible with social and environmental objectives and sustainable development.
History
Will be cancelled by Strategic planning policy statement for Northern Ireland (SPPS) - planning for sustainable development (DOENI, 2015) when all eleven councils have adopted a new Plan Strategy for the whole of their council area. Clarification of Policy PED 7 issued September 2011. Supersedes PPS 4: Industrial development (DOENI, 1997). Also supersedes Policy IC 16: Office Development and Policy IC 17: Small Office and Business Development of the Planning strategy for rural Northern Ireland (DOENI, 1993) insofar as they apply to Class B1 of the 2004 Use Classes Order. Relates to the following: Planning policy statement 4 - planning and economic development. Draft supplementary planning guidance - policy PED 8: development incompatible with economic development uses (consultation) (DOENI, 2012).

The Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland (DOENI) is now known as the Department for Communities (DfC). The Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland's role was to promote sustainable development principles, responsible land use, air and water quality, and waste management, the reduction of road traffic casualties and ensure effective local government.
