Abstract

Describes the technical principles of the Contaminated Land Exposure Assessment (CLEA) model that has been developed for DEFRA and the Environment Agency, for Research into the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University. The model estimates child and adult exposures to soil contaminants for those potentially living, working and/or playing on contaminated sites over long time periods and has been used to produce the Soil Guideline Values for the United Kingdom. It aims to assist risk assessors to judge whether it is appropriate to use a Soil Guideline Value as part of an assessment for a particular site, taking account of land use, contaminant type and general site conditions. Written for technical professionals who are familiar with assessing and managing the risks to human health from land contamination but who are not necessarily experts in exposure modelling. Describes the principles of the CLEA model and specifically how it is applied to the derivation of Soil Guideline Values.
