Abstract

Review of available information on the collapse of the World Trade Centre (WTC) towers identified several major safety questions: What can be done to reduce the vulnerability of a tall/large building to collapsing progressively and totally, Should provisions for the protection of occupants and the building itself in the event of fire be set at a higher standard, Could escape routes and evacuation of building occupants and the linkage with the emergency services be better provided and managed to help save lives? The Report presents therefore, initial recommendations following review of damage by extreme events to tall/large buildings at the World Trade Centre and elsewhere worldwide. Subjects considered include security, measures to limit the impact of fire, and egress during emergencies.
