Abstract

The potential of in-situ techniques for the cost-effective remediation of contaminated sites is becoming more widely recognised. An advantage for in-situ methods is that they avoid the environmental impacts and costs associated with excavation and off-site disposal of contaminated soil or liquid media. This report is a case study which describes the use of remedial treatment technique to stabilise a contaminated 'hot-spot' within an old landfill containing industrial waste. This was the first use of the technique as a way of treating contamination. The method is that of the patented Colmix process, which is the formation of columns in the ground of stabilised mixtures of the in-situ material and a setting slurry injected through and mixed in place by hollow-stem augers. Investigations, prior to treatment, had indicated that contaminated groundwater was leaching from the landfill into an adjacent estuary. The report describes aspects of the work undertaken including the investigation and risk assessment of the landfill and post-treatment monitoring of the site.
