Abstract

Volume E has two parts dealing with precast and in-situ concrete. Part 1 brings together up to date information on the well tried and the more recently developed techniques of precast concrete panel construction used principally as cladding to multi-storey steel or reinforced concrete framed buildings. There are interesting possibilities for the three-dimensional modelling of facades shared with the technologies using GRC and GRP. The potential for fast erection programmes comparable with those when lighter-weight materials are used has attractions where inherent strength and solidity is also an important factor. Part 2 deals with construction using in-situ concrete as a wall material as distinct from use, when reinforced, as a material with which to construct only a building's frame. The techniques vary from the most basic concept of un-reinforced 'no fines' low rise structures for houses to large multi-storey or utilitarian structures, for example grain silos, where the strength of reinforced concrete allied to its potential for being formed into complex shapes will continue to be the main criteria.
