Abstract

Volume F is in two parts dealing with glazing and with curtain walls and overcladding. The first looks at many types and techniques using glass and plastics. Glazing can now be used as an 'intelligent' working facade with facilities to exercise an unprecedented degree of control over the internal environment of building including thermal and acoustic comfort and, where appropriate, view and sunshine. The second part of this volume covers curtain wall and overcladding design and application including the 'Rainscreen' principle. There are three basic principles embodied in this technology which need to be understood by designers. * SEALED, in which all panel or glazing edges and possible paths which might permit water penetration of the wall are totally sealed with the intention of forming a complete weather barrier to the elements. * RAINSCREEN adopts the principle that the majority of rainwater will be deflected from the outermost face but assumes a minimal penetration through joints into an inner zone where drainage and evaporation to external air can occur. * PRESSURE EQUALISED RAINSCREEN exploits the use of the airspace behind the facing panels as a means of controlling the effects of wind action on the facade.
