Abstract

Methane and other gases often present with it, whether naturally occurring or in landfill gas, are dangerous. Throughout the construction process and the subsequent operation of the finished works, situations can arise of hazard to people and property. This Report provides guidance for construction professionals who may have to take these gases into account. After a summary of the physical and chemical properties of these gases, their hazardous characteristics are explained. How and in what situations methane is formed, how it moves or can be moved in the ground, and how the source of the methane can be identified or explained. The Report and its appendices provide information which will enable construction professionals to recognise potential methane problems and to initiate the process of finding solutions for them.
