Report
Abstract
Where development is, or could be, at risk from ground gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and landfill gas, a critical determinant of design is the assessed degree of risk. This report proposes a rational methodology for gas hazard evaluation and risk assessment that would be appropriate for a wide range of construction situations and ground gases, but particularly for methane and carbon dioxide. Outlining the principles of risk assessment and applying them to the context of ground gas entering a building, the risks presented by these gases are related to other tolerable risks and specifically to those of natural gas supply mains.
