Technical Note
Reviews the various trenchless construction methods available for the installation of pipes and conduits of less than 900mm diameter, and analyses the current use of these techniques by public utilities in the UK. A wide range of trenchless techniques are surveyed but the Note concentrates on those which have the greatest potential for replacing trenching in congested urban areas, i.e. microtunnelling, moling and pipe bursting. The various pipe materials available for use with trenchless methods are discussed, and the criteria for selecting a suitable trenchless construction method analysed.
