Abstract

Addresses design issues relating to the earthquake resistance of low to medium steel and concrete buildings, in accordance with Eurocode 8. Discusses performance requirements of no collapse and damage limitation, highlights the fundamentals of design, looking at characteristics, elements, dissipative structures and zones, ductility classes, capacity design method and provides useful flow charts of the design process. Also considers regularity in plan and elevation, classification and assessment. Geotechnical aspects of site conditions and site investigation are detailed, along with design ground motions, seismic analysis and foundations. Briefly discusses seismic joints and non-structural elements.
