Abstract
Discusses the issues around introducing zonal planning in England, as laid out the UK Government's white paper, 'Planning for the future' published in 2020. Looks at: the origins and key features of zonal planning as a tool; strengths and weaknesses of zoning; hybrid approaches combining and regulatory and discretionary planning; and the potential role of zoning in England. Includes discussion of zonal planning in a number of different nations such as the Netherlands, Germany and the USA, comparing the use of zones and how this relates to the UK’s current discretionary planning system.
