Abstract
Explores issues of urban metabolism i.e. energy and material use in cities and the implications for environmental sustainability, both now and in the future. Covers: describing, measuring and planning urban metabolism; infrastructure and the built environment in terms of physical capital and its effect on urban metabolism; material and energy flows with respect to consumption and management of waste; how cities have developed and how that might change in the future; and using urban metabolism for strategically advancing environmental sustainability.
