Abstract
Part of a series considering how planning can help to 'future-proof' society, to enable populations around the world adapt and cope with major challenges ahead in the twenty first century. This paper considers the major economic trends that will affect societies this century including population change, globalisation and competition, technological change, inequality and social cohesion, increased scarcity of natural resources exacerbated by over-use and climate change impacts. Argues that planners have a role in meeting these challenges to create successful places.
