The derivation of principal soil characteristics is presented, and the methods of computation are examined. Interaction of the structure and the ground is also examined, and performance specification for foundations is discussed with reference to tolerance and possible damage. Design of the foundation structures is divided to consider separately the different major classes of foundation type. It is emphasised throughout that movement may be accommodated within a properly designed structure, as well as resisted or avoided. The appendix demonstrates the use of computer modelling as a design aid, and sets out an example of some of the ideas advanced in the text for improvement of foundation performance.
