Abstract

Aldrich Library at the University of Brighton, the result of a limited competition, is designed with the interior environment and the user primarily in mind. It is equipped with up to date hardware and software as well as traditional learning materials. High quality building services ensure ease of use in all conditions. Both open study areas and closed areas for group work ensure acoustic viability. High quality concrete finishes were required and was achieved through a combination of careful detailing and the use of pour form, a plywood shuttering with a resin-impregnated paper overlay. Includes cost comment and working details of double glazed curtain wall, the cavities of which are filled with argon gas, aluminium light shelves which direct low angle sunlight onto the ceiling and external aluminium walkways which provide access and act as solar control shades.
