Abstract

Rendering has a long history of use on various types of external walls, usually to improve weathertightness but also for aesthetic reasons. For buildings up to four storeys, this guide gives outline advice to assist specifiers and builders in choosing render for different backgrounds and exposure, and includes summary guidance on materials selection and surface preparation. Although intended for use on new construction, the advice is broadly relevant to existing buildings where render has not been used previously or where old render is to be completely replaced, but only if walls are sound and free of damp.
