Architects' Journal Building Study
Abstract
Sergison Bates Architects, in collaboration with 360 Architecten and B2Ai, has led the transformation of the Leopold Barracks in Ghent into a vibrant mixed-use civic quarter. Centred around the newly completed Provinciehuis Oost-Vlaanderen, the 2-hectare site includes regional government offices, homes, a creche, hotel, art school, adult education centre and public gardens. Through a strategy of ‘repair, cut and fill, extend’, the team respected the Neo-Renaissance heritage while enhancing permeability, energy performance, and civic amenity. Achieving BREEAM Excellent, the project demonstrates a sensitive retrofit approach across extensive historic fabric and new additions. Includes: Project data, Architect’s view, Engineer’s view, Client’s view, Sustainability data, Working detail. Architects: Sergison Bates, 360 Architecten, B2Ai.
