Abstract

This SCI Advisory Note (AD 537) highlights an error in the Blue Book where web resistance values were calculated without applying the BS EN 1993-1-5:2006 limit that restricts the stiff bearing length (ss) to no greater than the depth between flanges (hw). This oversight affects tabulated web resistance values for smaller beam sizes (356 serial size and below), particularly at longer stiff bearing lengths. The note explains that using values for ss ≤ hw remains conservative and acceptable. It provides a corrective approach and advises caution when referencing affected values in design calculations.
