Abstract
Describes a kitchen and bathroom extension by Office S&M in Walthamstow, replacing a poorly built lean-to with a design that contrasts yet relates to the Victorian terrace. A diagonal storage wall optimizes space, eliminating separate circulation and framing garden views. Circular and rectangular openings distinguish the bathroom and kitchen, inspired by the clients’ existing fixtures. A sprayed-on rubber exterior unifies the extension, providing a seamless, low-cost, waterproof finish contrasting with the brickwork. Inside, industrial materials like polished concrete, zinc, and encaustic tiles are softened by a yellow gradient colour scheme, transitioning from canary yellow cupboards to butter-coloured bathroom tiles.
