Abstract
Discusses the new front-of-house space and studio theatre at the Grade I-listed Bristol Old Vic is the culmination of five years of research, consultation, and construction, aimed at re-engaging audiences by creating a more open and inviting presence. The design reveals the historic Georgian auditorium façade for the first time, framed by a large light well and punctuated by new openings that reinterpret past alterations. A lightweight Douglas fir glulam structure forms a flexible foyer space, designed for disassembly and reuse, while an oak lath screen integrates natural ventilation. Cor-ten steel sun-shading shutters, engraved with historical texts, reinforce the theatre’s legacy while embracing its evolving community role.
