Abstract
Discusses the Observatory at Graveney School, designed by Urban Projects Bureau, providing 12 new classrooms, external walkways, terraces, and a rooftop observatory for outdoor learning and astronomy. Constructed from cross-laminated timber, the building balances sustainability and affordability, setting a precedent for low-budget, high-quality educational spaces. Its triple-block massing and tiered roofline integrate with the school's historic and modern architecture, while a central accessible ramp creates a dynamic gathering space. Designed for natural ventilation and daylighting, the structure features mesh cladding that regulates solar gain and transforms in appearance under different lighting conditions, enhancing its lightweight yet solid presence.
