Abstract
Discusses Sunderland City Hall, a key part of a £500 million regeneration project, transforming the city centre by integrating civic offices, public services, and community spaces. Designed for Sunderland City Council, the building houses SCC offices, the Department of Work and Pensions, Gentoo, and Sunderland College, with additional space for lease. Arranged around a light-filled atrium, the design fosters collaboration and engagement, while the publicly accessible ground floor includes a council chamber, service centre, and café. Externally, the restrained façade reflects Sunderland’s historic character, featuring stone-clad columns, extensive glazing, and aluminium profiles for shading, balancing civic presence with openness and sustainability.
