This publication explains the classification of cross-sections based on their susceptibility to local buckling, primarily determined by the width-to-thickness ratio (c/t) for plated elements and the equivalent diameter-to-thickness ratio (de/t) for circular and elliptical hollow sections, with factors such as material strength and stress systems also playing a role. BS EN 1993‐1‐1:2022 specifies the maximum ratios for Class 1, 2, and 3 cross-sections, with angles limited to Class 3 and sections exceeding these limits classified as Class 4.
