Abstract

Using recent examples at national and international level to highlight the risks associated with vehicles being parked close together when a fire breaks out, and the resulting loss of life, property and even the demolition of buildings. Explores the warning signs and new hazards posed by modern vehicles. Indicates that there is no requirement for the installation of sprinklers in car parks in current building regulations technical guidance documents, with reliance on smoke ventilation and passive protection. Recommends designers consider installing automatic sprinkler systems in car parks, to enable getting fires under control quickly and make it safe for fire fighters to carry out their duties. Also considers the suitability of other modern storage methods, such as car stackers. Looks at system design and installation and includes 2 case studies demonstrating good practice.
