Abstract
The World Green Building Council defines green as a building that, ‘in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative impacts, and can create positive impacts, on our climate and natural environment. Green buildings preserve precious natural resources and improve our quality of life.’ (What is green building?) They go on to explain that not all green buildings are alike, nor should they be. In this article, we’ll look at a variety of factors that must be considered when defining green, talk a bit about green design and operations, materials efficiency, sustainability, etc., as well as look at the top two environmental assessment programmes – BREEAM and LEED.
