Abstract

Intended to be used as a general basis for the geotechnical aspects of the design of buildings and civil engineering works. It is concerned with the requirements for strength, stability, serviceability and durability of structures.

History

Superseded by BS EN 1990:2023. This document is considered to be a first generation Eurocode and is the applicable standard for building and civil engineering works constructed in the UK. A period now exists to prepare for the transition between first and second generation Eurocodes. First generation Eurocodes will be withdrawn by BSI on 30 March 2028 and will be replaced by second generation Eurocodes. Supersedes BS 8002:1994, BS 8004:1986, BS 8081:1989 and BS EN 1997-1:2004. Amendment dated 31 January 2010 - Implementation of CEN corrigendum February 2009. Amendment dated 31 July 2014 - Implementation of CEN amendment A1:2013. BS EN 1997-1:2004+A1:2013. Where a normative part of this EN allows for choice to be made at the national level, the range and possible choice will be given in the normative text, and a note will qualify it as a Nationally Determined Parameter (NDP). NDPs can be a specific value for a factor, a specific level or class, a particular method or a particular application rule if several are proposed in the EN. To enable EN 1997-1 to be used in the UK, the NDPs are published in the National Annex.
