Abstract
Discusses what form a comprehensive unit would take and identifies best practice in the built environment from a child-centred perspective. It is primarily intended for new-builds and upgrades of existing facilities, covering general functional and design considerations and detailed information on the specific design and engineering requirements.

Amended March 2013. Supersedes HBN 23 - Hospital accommodation for children and young people (1994). Should be read in conjunction with the overarching guidance ‘Friendly healthcare environments for children and young people’ (NHS Estates, 2003).
