Abstract

To provide criteria for the evaluation of the seismic performance of existing individual building structures; to describe the approach in selecting necessary corrective measures and to set forth criteria for the design of retrofitting measures (i.e. conception, structural analysis including intervention measures, final dimensioning of structural parts and their connections to existing structural elements).

History

This document is considered to be a first generation Eurocode and is the applicable standard for building and civil engineering works constructed in the UK. A period now exists to prepare for the transition between first and second generation Eurocodes. First generation Eurocodes will be withdrawn by BSI on 30 March 2028 and will be replaced by second generation Eurocodes. Supersedes DD ENV 1998-1-4:1996. Amendment dated 30 April 2010 - Implementation of CEN corrigendum March 2010. Amendment dated 31 August 2013 - Implementation of CEN corrigendum August 2013. Where a normative part of this EN allows for a choice to be made at the national level, the range and possible choice will be given in the normative text and a note will qualify it as a Nationally Determined Parameter (NDP). NDPs can be a specific value for a factor, a specific level or class, a particular method or a particular application rule if several are proposed in the EN. To enable EN 1998 to be used in the UK, the NDPs will be published in a National Annex, which will be made available by BSI in due course, after public consultation has taken place. There are generally no requirements in the UK to consider seismic loading, and the whole of the UK may be considered an area of very low seismicity in which the provisions of EN 1998 need not apply. There is no intention to produce a National Annex to this standard and therefore where it is necessary that seismic assessment and retrofit of a building is performed to the provisions of EN 1998-3, the specifier should confirm the values of the NDPs to be used.
