Abstract
Aims to extend the guidance offered in Manual for Streets (MfS1) to cover busier streets and non-trunk roads, attempting to close gaps in design guidance between the earlier document and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB). Section A explores the context and process, looking at street types, highway design, risk and liability and the implementation process. Section B covers detailed design issues relating to pedestrian, cycle and bus facilities, carriageways and then looks more closely at junctions, crossings and access, visibility, on-street parking, street furniture and trees, traffic signs and markings. The final section includes 5 case studies.
History
This companion guide (MfS2) supports: Manual for Streets (DCLG 2007, published in conjunction with DfT), which superseded: Design Bulletin 32: Residential roads and footpaths. 2nd edition (DOE, 1992) and Places, streets and movements - a companion guide to Design Bulletin 32: residential roads and footpaths (DETR, 1998). An additional summary is also available, Manual for streets - a summary (DFT, 2007).
