Abstract
Promotes good practice design principles to ensure new buildings and their approaches can meet the needs of disabled people and are convenient to use. Advising on provision for on-street and off-street car parking, setting down points and garaging, access routes to and around all buildings, and entrances to and interiors of new buildings. Offers recommendations for routes to recreational facilities associated with and in the immediate vicinity of buildings. Also applies to assessing the accessibility and usability of existing buildings and, where practicable, as a basis for their improvement. The extent to which the recommendations apply to listed and historic buildings is determined on a case by case basis. Annexes examine management and maintenance issues, light reflectance values (LRVs) and visual contrast, wheelchair space allowance and manoeuvring, space allowance for passing people on access routes, slip resistance, reach ranges and hoists, slings and showering/changing benches.

Superseded by BS 8300-1:2018 and BS 8300-2:2018. Supersedes BS 8300:2001. Came into effect 28 February 2009. Confirmed November 2015. A full revision of the 2001 edition taking into consideration changes introduced in amendment 1 in 2005 and comment from disability groups and construction professionals. Introduces changes to the recommendations for: steps, stairs and handrails in line with BS 5395-1, vision panels in doors have been relaxed, door opening/closing furniture location and design, means of escape, percentage of accessible bedrooms to be increased, accessible baby changing facilities and changing places sanitary accommodation, achieving sufficient visual contrast and light reflectance values and slip resistance. Amendment dated 31 July 2010 - A1. Changes to 4.2.1.1, 5.10, 6.5.6.1 and references.
