Split into five sections, briefly describing the background, setting the context and looking at planning projects, the design approach offers principles and strategies, designing school spaces examines spaces: access, circulation, learning, social and support, provides detailed technical information and offers some case studies.

Recommended area guidelines are now superseded by BB 104 Area guidelines for SEND and alternative provision: including special schools, alternative provision, specially resourced provision and units (DfE, 2015). Supersedes BBs 77, 91 and 94: Building Bulletin 77 Designing for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities in schools (2005 revision) (DfES, 2005).
