Interim Advice Notes
Abstract
One of the options for implementing dynamic traffic control and management is through the use of managed motorways incorporating the dynamic use of the hard shoulder (MM-DHS). This guide explores the issues of using the hard shoulder through the centre of a junction, Through Junction Running (TJR) and suggests applying this on a permanent basis.
History
Interim Advice Notes (IANs) are issued by the Highways Agency from time to time. They contain specific Guidance, which shall only be used in connection with works on motorways and trunk roads in England, subject to any specific implementation instructions contained within an IAN. Whilst IANs must be read in conjunction with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW) for the above works, and may incorporate amendments or additions to documents in these manuals, they are not part of the DMRB or MCHW. [PR 100/08]. Read with HA IAN 111/08, "Managed motorway implementation guidance: Dynamic use of the hard shoulder". Read with HA IAN 139/11, "Managed motorways project safety risk work instructions"
