Abstract

Covers the design of bridge decks according to BS 5400, including the amendments to Part 3 issued in 2000. The guidance relates mainly to highway bridge decks, and where the deck slab is on top of 1-section steel girders. Main beams, restraints, slab design and shear connection design principles are presented. Elastic and plastic moment resistance of beams are both included (non-compact and compact sections according to BS 5400 terminology). Reference is made to the Highways Agency documents that implement the use of BS 5400 and which provide additional requirements.
