Abstract

Fourth in a series of client reports to ensure that those involved at the sharp end of designing, building and maintaining structures are more aware of potential durability problems in cement-based materials. Includes a number of case studies concerned with the deterioration of cement based materials: Deterioration of concrete bridge foundations caused by the thaumasite form of sulfate attack, Ground heave problems associated with cement/lime stabilisation of soil containing pyrites, Ground heave problems due to the formation of thaumasite at an old cement works, and Deterioration caused to a highway structure by alkali silica reaction (ASR) involving de-icing salts as an external source of alkalis.
