Abstract

Timber bell-frames are often among the oldest contents of historic churches, and as fine examples of the carpentry work of their period, they make an important contribution to the churches' historic continuity. They are often neglected and allowed to fall into disrepair leading to destruction and replacement by iron frames. The existing number of bell-frames is a finite resource and SPAB believes that there is a pressing need to protect and preserve them where possible. This pamphlet aims to help all those involved in the care of historic timber bell-frames to assess, repair and maintain them.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings was founded in 1877. They have a firm set of principles about how old buildings should be repaired and the practical knowledge to show how these can be put into effect.
