Abstract
cleaning the exteriors masonry of buildings present a number of issues for owners, their advisers and contractors. This digest, in two parts, describes many of these issues, often presented as risks because of the materials and methods used, and the conditions encountered. It is especially relevant to public and historic buildings. The first part outlines the approach that should be taken to managing cleaning projects, the types of cleaning (broadly), choosing cleaning methods, specification and tendering criteria, research and trial cleaning, and analyses the cleaning of a building as a process. This part categorises a range of widely used cleaning methods and materials, highlights key issues, and describes the problems and risks associated with each method.
