Abstract
Decay of timber occurs only when wood is allowed to remain damp over long periods. In buildings, the most serious type of decay is caused by the fungus Serpula lacrymans. Eradication of attack calls for carefully planned measures. This digest explains how to recognise dry rot and how to eradicate it. The principles which govern successful eradication of decay are prevention of further entry of dampness into the structure of a building, drying out the moisture which has already entered, and dealing with the fungus and repair of the damage which it has caused. These principles hold good whether the out break is small or extensive.
