Architects' Journal Building Study
A 8.5m width plot with 100m² of floor plates at the front of the site provide a unique urban space for a house at 8-9 Clerkenwell Green, London. Problems of lack of light, depth of the site, mixed use, travel distances and fundamental principles of means of escape were overcome with a series of elegant devices. The introduction of a Mediaeval ginnel provided a private outside route giving a separation of the component elements of the building. An electrically operated glass roof slides back opening up a potentially land locked site. Includes working details of a circular staircase.
First produced in 1895, the Architects' Journal features comprehensive building studies, and in-depth technical articles.
