Failure of standard types of mastic asphalt laid over thermal insulation, such as in warm deck sandwich flat roof construction, has occurred during severe winter conditions. BRE research has shown that the performance of mastic asphalt, particularly at low temperature, can be significantly improved by the addition of small proportions of appropriate polymers. Parameters derived from a simple bending test carried out at -20°C have shown the performance of polymer-modified asphalt to be better than existing British Standard types. BRE's objective of developing a laboratory test method sensitive to the impairment in the quality of asphalt caused by prolonged heating during remelt has been achieved.
