Abstract

Lightweight sandwich panels can profitably be used in buildings because of their excellent insulating properties. However they often consist of a thick structural core of flammable material protected on the interior by a range of thin facing materials. The risk to life that may result from their involvement in fire is difficult to predict. This has led to doubts about their use in vulnerable occupancies. The Fire Research Station has developed a method of quantifying the extent of risk and hence of providing a basis for improving the design of such components.
