Abstract

Intended to remind and inform designers and site supervisory staff of ways of avoiding some of the most troublesome defects which have beset Local Authority housing. This Defect Action Sheet covers water storage cisterns: warning pipes. Failures discussed include collapse of ceiling; loss of strength of chipboard floors; damage to wiring, decorations, furnishings etc.; Water damage and staining to outside wall. Defects discussed include warning pipe of inadequate bore, sagging or with insufficient slope, not protected against freezing; pipes positioned over doors, windows, balanced flue terminal outlets or where accidental damage is likely; pipes not vandal resistant; and pipes not suitable for boiling water discharge.
