Brings to the wider attention of the building and building services professions the fact that outwardly trivial aspects of hot water systems - excessive storage volumes, lowered storage temperatures or the use of certain types of rubber washers for example - may encourage bacterial multiplication to cause an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease. Current knowledge is reviewed to provide guidance on design and operation of water supply systems, paying particular attention to the potential risk from some types of solar water heating systems.
